How to Reduce Usage of Plastic Bags

Use of plastic bags have become a part of our daily life. We do not bother carrying items without the use of plastic bags. Most people do not re-use plastic bags and fill their garbage drum with them without considering that most of them can be re-used. Our general public is not much aware of the consequences of pollution created by plastic bags.
Several countries have realized the dangers of the plastic bags to the environment, and many of them have implemented and are considering ban on plastic bags.
Why is plastic bag bad for environment?
Plastic bags are bad for environment as they are non-biodegradable this means that they do not decompose like other items so this creates pollution in the environment. People will throw them after using them, this will create litter. Plastic bags generally chock water pipes and sewerages creating problems for traffic and water gets accumulated on the roads. Plastic bags if burned result in large amounts of toxic gases being released in to environment

Methods to reduce Plastic Bags
  • More and more people should be made aware of the consequences of plastic bags.
  • Research should be made in to making bio-degradable plastic bags so people could use these ones instead of the non-biodegradable.
  • Re-use of plastic bags should be encouraged and special discounts should be given at shopping centers for people who re-use plastic bags or bring their own cotton bags for shopping.
  • At the shopping centers, staff should be instructed to request customers to carry minimum plastic bags .
  • Plastic bags should be replaced with the paper or cotton bags.
  • A fine should be imposed particularly to households if they throw plastic bags and garbage outside their house.
  • Similarly a fine can be imposed on general public if they throw plastic bags on roads and streets after using them.
  • Proper garbage collection drums should be installed at various places.
  • Governments can use print and electronic media to control use of plastic bags.
  • Instead of buying new plastic bags to collect garbage we can use the used plastic bags.
  • We can save our earth by reducing garbage and minimizing the use of plastic bags.
  • Governments should introduce bans on large usage of plastic bags.
The immediate ban on plastic bags seems not possible and therefore there is a dire need to create awareness about the threats to our environment posed by the use of plastic bags. If the excessive use of plastic bags goes on there is probability that the vegetation would finish gradually. Plastic bags spoil the environment and beauty of earth and black color plastics can cause cancer if they are burnt openly.
